International Stereotypes of Americans

HPU is known for being one of the most diverse universities in the United States. With this diversity comes a large variety of different cultures, and with that, stereotypes.

"They're fat, lazy, and rude," said Deb Karlsen, Norwegian HPU student, about Americans. "I know now that that's not really true, but that's what I always heard growing up."

There may be many different reasons that stereotypes like this exist, but many students seem to think that they originate from over-exaggerated statistics.

"I think the US has one of the highest obesity rates in the world," said Justin Black, HPU Student and American citizen. "So people probably just assume that all Americans are overweight."

Another stereotype that is common in many European countries is that Americans are stupid.

"In Europe, we learn English as well as our native language," said Karlsen. "And we know all about American history - Americans don't know anything about the rest of the world. I mean, you guys study world history, but most people don't even know that Norway is ruled by kings and queens - I know almost all of the American presidents."

Despite the many negative stereotypes that exist about America, many international students said they have been proven wrong since the arrived in the states.

"I love it here! Most people are really nice, in Hawaii and on the mainland!" said Karlsen. "There are a few people that fit the stereotypes, but for the most part they are completely wrong."
